How to choose an NDIS provider
1. Check registration status
Start by checking if the provider is NDIS-registered. The NDIS Commission public register lists all registered providers and their registration groups. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered providers for most supports, but NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers.
2. Understand your needs
Before you contact providers, be clear about what you need: the type of support, how often, where (in-home, community, online), any specialist skills required, and your budget. Your support coordinator can help you define this.
3. Ask the right questions
Use our question checklists below (based on official NDIS guidance) to interview providers. Key areas: experience, qualifications, availability, cancellation policies, invoicing, and how they'll report on your goals.
4. Compare your shortlist
Don't decide on the first provider you find. Compare at least 2-3 options. Use this tool to keep notes side-by-side and see which provider best matches your needs and preferences.
5. Review your service agreement
Once you choose a provider, you'll sign a service agreement. Check that it covers: services to be delivered, costs and payment terms, cancellation notice periods, complaints process, how to exit the agreement, and who to contact with concerns. The NDIS has minimum requirements for service agreements.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an NDIS provider is registered?
Check the NDIS Commission's public register at ndiscommission.gov.au. Registered providers have undergone screening and meet quality and safety standards. This tool links directly to the register for each provider you compare.
Do I have to use a registered NDIS provider?
It depends on your plan management type. NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered providers for most supports, but certain high-risk supports require registration.
What questions should I ask a plan manager?
Ask about their experience, client numbers, response times, reporting frequency, how they handle invoice queries, their fee structure, and whether they provide proactive budget tracking. This tool gives you a complete checklist based on NDIS guidance.
Can I share my provider comparison with my support coordinator?
Yes. Once you've added providers and your notes, you can print the comparison or copy the shareable URL. The URL contains no personal information - only the provider IDs you've selected.
What if a provider isn't listed on FindMyHelp?
You can still check their NDIS Commission registration directly at ndiscommission.gov.au. This tool works best with FindMyHelp-listed providers, but the question checklists apply to any provider.
