What is a short-notice cancellation?
A short-notice cancellation is when you cancel a support service without giving the required notice period (usually 2 clear business days). Providers can claim a cancellation fee from your plan budget.
Notice period
The standard notice period is 2 clear business days before the scheduled service. For example:
- Service on Thursday → cancel by Monday 5pm
- Service on Monday → cancel by Thursday 5pm (of the previous week)
Cancellation fee limits
The PAPL sets maximum cancellation fees. The fee depends on the support type and the length of the canceled booking.
How to avoid cancellation fees
- Give at least 2 clear business days' notice
- Check your service agreement for the provider's cancellation policy
- If you're unwell or have an emergency, explain to your provider—they may waive the fee
What if I'm charged a cancellation fee?
- Check your service agreement
- Ask your provider to explain the charge
- Contact your plan manager (if you have one)
- If you believe the fee is incorrect, contact the NDIA or the NDIS Commission
